A Contrast to the Hate Messaging and Fights
A recap of our recent article reporting plus bonus content.
Colorful chalk art, including hearts and the words Be Kind, were on the pathway entrance to the Mount Rose K-8 school this morning, in stark contrast to the hate messaging seen in recent days at other schools, as well as fights all over our region documented on our social media, from outside clubs to local beaches.
Hours after Our Town Reno posted a photo of a swastika carved in the grass at Billinghurst Middle School yesterday, the Principal Kevin Arnold said it had been covered and that an investigation had been opened.
Superintendent Joe Ernst then wrote: "The Washoe County School District has zero tolerance for any form of hate speech. We are investigating these acts and will apply appropriate discipline including potential criminal violations, if applicable."
Several spray painted swastikas and the written out n word were part of the hate filled vandalism at Reno High last week, for which investigations are ongoing, with school sanctions already in effect for multiple students, including seniors, who have been suspended until the end of the school year, and who will not be allowed to walk at graduation.
Strangely, some readers are blaming us for covering these events with actual photos and videos, and for being a conduit between readers who trust us to send this content and the community. We firmly believe accountability and awareness of hate and violence are necessary.
In one recent out of control downtown brawl, we identified a current Wolf Pack football player as being involved, as well as a star player who just transferred to another school.
We sent the video and information to assistant Athletic Director Aaron Juarez, who initially said it was being looked into, but then ignored our other messages. At last check, the player remains listed on the Wolf Pack website.
Another video we recirculated showed a young woman shooting another outside a club, and after several articles with quotes from the mom of the injured young woman, the suspected shooter was finally arrested. This week, a video shared with us showed the club’s owner being told his license was being revoked.
Reporting about hate and violence matters, especially when the content itself comes from a community craving for accountability and a better, safer, more caring world, including here in the Biggest Little City.
So this morning, out in front of my house, someone got mugged. I have the video a person leave any kind of contact information when they came back to my ring doorbell, so I was gonna give you the video. Maybe you can post it and the person will see it and we’ll get back to me or at least we can just let people know this is happening in this area I have the video. Let me know if I can post it
