A Scrutinized Elimination Trial Run before the big November showdowns
A recap of our recent original reporting plus bonus content.
With Washoe County very much under the microscope, as one of the few competitive electoral arenas in the country, with the Senate, Congress, and presidency very much on the line, many eyes could be on our vote counters come November.
The Washoe County Registrar of Voters has had repeated leadership turnover in recent years, with an auditor noting last year it had experienced “inadequate staffing levels, experience and institutional knowledge” which will make the rest of 2024 additionally challenging.
We are already receiving emails from residents complaining of ballots being sent for people at the wrong address, while voters in a small Reno precinct south of Rancho San Rafael Park were sent the wrong ballots, and will be sent new ones.
To speed up results, Democratic Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar said this week election officials across Nevada will now be allowed to start tabulating in-person Election Day votes while they come in, as well as early votes and mail-in ballots, rather than waiting for polls to close to begin the counting.
No results though will be released until after polls close. “We will be able to release more data to the public more quickly with this new process,” Aguilar said, with initial results sent to the secretary’s office by 6 p.m. on Election Day.
“This also gives counties more time to process and tabulate results than they’ve had before, as they face intense pressure from the public to release these results quickly,” he said.
Voters have already started mailing in their ballots, while in-person early voting will go from Saturday to June 7th, with primary voting day on June 11th.
The release of the results for next month’s primary will be a test run for the much higher stakes in November, but these will also mark the end of campaigns for countless local candidates who have worked so diligently to make it to the runoff stage, and also eliminate those who have barely tried.
