Filing Up and Gassed Out
It’s filing season for 2022 elections and Mayor Hillary Schieve is running for another term. Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus whom she often argues with in public meetings has been sending emails with childhood memories but hasn’t officially registered yet, at least according to available Internet databases.
Frequent commenter Chad Dehne is back, as is the most progressive of the probable group William Mantle.
In city council races, Brooke Siem, who is well versed in the ways of social media and going from gig to gig, as a writer and a chef, among several occupations, could very well unseat the almost too cozy with developers Bonnie Weber in Ward 4.
In terms of Washoe County Commission races, the District 3 Democratic primary is already crowded and competitive with Hawah Ahmad, Marilu Garcia and Kyle Isacksen.
State Senate District 13 has the union popular Richard “Skip” Daly, with a tough primary against yet to be registered but expected candidate Nnedi Stephens, a favorite among many local advocates.
We recently featured Democratic candidate Aaron Sims who is going for State Senate District 16 who expects an uphill climb in November, given the demographics of that particular electorate. Assemblywoman Lisa Krasner is already signed up on the Republican side, as is radio host Monica Jaye whose about bio includes this line: “Issues need to be solved in this STATE before a penny is spent on illegals.”
Like Sims in our article, at a recent event, Governor Steve Sisolak, working on reelection, called housing a “human right” and according to the RGJ added “city and county leaders are free to explore rent control and other proposals meant to temper Nevada's superheated housing market…”
We are all gassed out, and the horrible war in Ukraine isn’t helping at all on that front.
We recently featured a UNR student with ties to both Russia and Ukraine, worried about her geographically distant relatives, but also fending for herself locally with higher and higher prices, working as a gogo dancer at nights to be able to pursue her studies.
Speaking of gassed out, Pat Cashell, son of former mayor Bob Cashell, and in charge of running the Cares Campus, is apparently leaving his leadership position with Volunteers of America. Speculation is that he wants to run for mayor once Mayor Schieve is no longer a candidate or in the position herself.
There’s also speculation Karma Box run by Grant Denton will get the next contract to manage the Cares Campus, now called a “zoo” by people staying there, with new allegations of drug use within the compound. We can’t verify that as we aren’t allowed inside. Florida-based Jon DeCarmine has been paid thousands and thousands of dollars to write reports about the compound, basically confirming what our reporting and advocates have been saying all along, even before the “unmanageable warehouse” as one staff member told us opened.
Speaking of a lack of local transparency, Renown said a personnel misconduct investigation led to the ouster of its once heralded CEO Anthony "Tony" Slonim, but gave little immediate information on any details. Doors are open in Reno when it’s a ribbon cutting ceremony and the sun is out, but try to do any reporting when you are actually trying to shed light on darkness, lack of humanity or clear shortcomings and let us know how that goes.
We released two podcast episodes this week, one about a punk concert for the benefit of local mutual aid efforts, and another about a nighttime street photographer.
Our recommended read is a book about Slab City and we also featured a local teacher who is a slam poetry champion.
