Before the motion was even approved, the Reno city clerk started outlining planned dates for the internal selection rollout to replace outgoing Ward 3 city councilman Oscar Delgado, who is leaving the post midterm.
To the surprise of no one, despite all the expected excuses of this being “the worst possible time,” right before an actual election, the selection process was again chosen, as was recently the case for Neoma Jardon’s replacement Kathleen Taylor in Ward 5, and previously for Devon Reese in the at-large seat.
Jenny Brekhus was more involved this go-round, raising new alarms and also asking pointed questions, including seeking more feedback from neighborhood boards. Naomi Duerr who is running for her re-election was concerned about the short timeframe. Reese then called it “not perfect,” but “workable,” so the clerk’s proposed timeline was approved as well.
It will have candidates start filing Friday Sep. 30 until Oct. 6, narrowing down the finalists on Oct. 12, with final interviews and selection on Oct. 26. Brekhus, who predictably voted against the motion, said “voters lose out,” while “special interests” who have the “ears” of council people win.
