Of Local Mortgages, Future Rents, Short Term Rentals and Library Trustees
Highlights of our weekly reporting plus bonus content.
Stories we didn’t cover ourselves but caught our eye this week included Nevada with another #1 dubious ranking of having the worst declining mortgage borrower affordability due to higher payments, interest rates and lower incomes locally.
In the rental price department, there was some better news with one forecast saying the average rent in Reno now at about $1,500 is expected to continue its new trend of declining slowly with more and more apartments being built around Northern Nevada.
Meanwhile, Washoe County commissioners this week decided to move forward with plans for a dozen new regulations to curb the proliferation of short-term rental properties, especially around Lake Tahoe.
They may soon be reengaged in the even more contentious issue of the library board with current chair Frank Perez stepping down to run for the Ward 1 council seat, following a heated public evaluation of libraries director Jeff Scott on Wednesday night.
Another trustee Lea Moser left the meeting and continued to watch it online amid the usual back and forth arguments, with some vocal conservative members of the community not liking drag queen story hour and certain books being available, while progressive members pushed back on the importance of diversity.
Trustees voted 3-2 to accept Scott’s overall positive evaluation, so with Perez stepping down, the next appointee might be crucial in determining the direction our library system takes in the months ahead.
