Our Town Reno's 2022 Reporting Team
As some of you may know, our reporting teams are made up of revolving students at the Reynolds School of Journalism who value the importance of connecting with community, while deepening their own empathy.
In this Spring 2022 semester, we welcome four new reporters with compassion for people struggling, the environment, different communities and local artists.
“Our Town Reno provides a voice to those who do not get enough space and representation in the mainstream media,” graduate student Kingkini Sengupta says. “The mainstream media often … forget to talk about the common people who are an integral part of the larger picture. My role as a part of the Our Town Reno team will be to reach out to these underrepresented people and make them heard!”
Savannah Scott wants to pursue our #keeprenogreen reporting. “One of the best things about Reno is the natural biodiversity of the area,” she explains. “We are surrounded by trees, wildlife, and natural attractions like the Truckee River and Lake Tahoe. The health of our planet greatly impacts us here in Northern Nevada, and I hope to cover the climate crisis from right here at home, where it impacts us most.”
“I hope to illustrate the experiences of people of color in Reno, and share more stories about community organizations and their people,” says one of our other new reporters Lynn Lazaro.
With our fourth new reporter, Jaden Urban, we are starting a new regular rubric on music. “My plans with reporting for Our Town Reno is [to] put more local artists on the map,” he says. “The music scene is very rich and vibrant in Reno and no [one] seems to really highlight [it.] My ultimate goal is [to] dig deep in the Reno music scene and discover some great artists and help tell their stories. Music brings us all together and I think with more exposure here in Reno, it can bring our community a lot closer.”
If you want to help our reporters, never hesitate to suggest story ideas through our contact page: https://www.ourtownreno.com/contact
Our current lineup consists of feature stories Monday through Wednesday, issued in the morning, our podcast Thursday, our Substack Friday, our new music rubric Saturday and our recommended read Sunday, with more breaking news related to issues we cover and social media posts throughout the week.
We also have a citizen’s forum such as the picture series with main photo above, this most recent one on the unfortunate rise of hostile architecture in our downtown areas. We always welcome your own photos and contributions, including if you want to write up a local music review or recommend your own favorite local book, never hesitate to reach out!
We also have an Ideas for Progress section where we welcome outside op-eds on helping make Reno a better place for all, not just the developers.
Our podcast episode this week is with Reno Food Systems, and all they’ve grown so far and their big plans as well for 2022.
Our #keeprenorad section features a walk-on local basketball player at UNR with an eye on also helping our environment.
Our recommended read is with comic artist master social justice storyteller Joe Sacco.
