Reno's Redistricting Moves Onward
Our Substack has highlights of our reporting from across our channels with bonus content.
A Zoom took place last night presenting four options for six wards, instead of the current five wards plus the at-large seat, for consideration by Reno’s City Council, after a bill to keep the body as is failed in the recent legislature. A previous change to go to six wards had been made in 2017, to take effect for the 2024 election cycle.
Former mayoral candidate William Mantle who asked questions during the presentation followed up with us by saying he was pleased overall, but still had concerns.
Mantle wrote he hopes Council will “have vibrant discussions about what these maps mean to the communities they impact. I think we have to point out which councilors are where. It’s not lost on me that each one is getting an uncontested Ward by another incumbent…”
During the Zoom, there were other participants wondering how the ongoing uncertainty will affect 2024 races, with incumbents getting to vote on these maps, while other would be candidates are in the dark about which ward they will be in.
Presenters made clear that Council has the authority to modify and change any of these options, and that public comment for this is still open, via an online form, email or voice mail.
On the City of Reno website, it indicates that “City Council will consider the final map options during its August meetings. The Council is scheduled to consider ordinance introduction on August 9 and ordinance adoption on August 23. We encourage the community to continue to stay involved in the process and share your input with the Council.”
