The Downtown Dominion of Reno's Casino Operators
As evidenced by recent developments, such as more motels about to be destroyed by Colorado-based, empty lot-producing, gaming company Jacobs Entertainment, or a new The Row sought-for renewed study for the future of Virginia Street, the present and future of Reno’s downtown is still very much in the hands of remaining casino operators.
Our early week update above on Jacobs Entertainment and doomed motels was our most engaging item on Facebook, with nearly 100 comments, many of them thought-provoking. One of our Gen Z reporters, a Reno local, added his own perspective of downtown casinos with this essay and picture series. We also went into detail on the current cyclists vs. casinos downtown showdown, played out Wednesday at Reno’s City Council, as, no surprise, all in for the casinos, except for Jenny Brekhus with the derailed cyclists.
While the air might have been better in the past few days, in these times of never ending pandemic and fire season, we reported on local mutual aid groups demonstrating their inspirational empathy and organizational know-how with a new collective endeavor to distribute high quality masks for people in need. The initiative is another example of how mutual aid is growing to fill in more and more urgent gaps.
Sticking to the #helpeachother theme we often report on, our podcast episode this week is about a non profit which used a grant to help local seniors combat loneliness and survive with technology during a time of increased isolation. We also produced the below video to showcase the good work Seniors in Service has been doing.
