Troubled Times in the 775, While Navigating the Sometimes Murky Waters of Local Social Media and the World Around Us
A recap of our recent reporting plus bonus content.
Are we playing cards, on the verge of World War Three, or both? Those were questions asked during and after the recent geopolitical mano a mano between former reality tv personalities turned presidents performing as always before cameras with the US/Europe alliance very much in the balance.
Here in Reno, this past weekend, a local teenager rolled coal on Mark Amodei protesters before stopping his vehicle and engaging in fisticuffs, briefly stopping other traffic in a scene which could have resulted in much worse, beyond the one elderly man who was left with a bloodied ear.
We recently reshared the video of a local stylist and attention seeking social media personality, in which, as we noted, she was repeating the words and imitating the one-armed gesture Elon Musk recently made to celebrate the renewed Donald Trump presidency.
On Reddit, we were called Nazi sympathizers, while via Facebook we received death threats. We were asked to post the video on the Reno subreddit, but we no longer engage there as our reports have been defamed and distorted on that sub, sometimes to say the opposite of what these actually indicated.
One Facebook commenter mentioned our coordinator previously losing his son, and then disturbingly adding “you’d think he would take death a little more seriously.”
This local vomit is not new. We remember being under a deluge of threats when we accurately pointed out Kyle Rittenhouse had for a time moved to this area, buying a vehicle and refurnishing a house.
At that time, people in positions of power, from local media and in the highest communications positions, blasted us for not knowing what “true journalism” was as if they were paragons themselves.
We will persist in our mission which has always been communal and crowd sourced in its methodology, in an attempt to have northern Nevadans share their own stories and video alerts via our channels, from gofundmes to promoting small businesses, from protests to mutual aid endeavors, from street artists to skateboarders, from letting us know when they’ve been kicked out of motels or RHA housing, to when a person in the community is displaying disturbing behavior.
Some on the right will call us a left wing rag, while on the left they will say we are cowards. Meanwhile, the virtue signaling gentrifiers in the powerful local center will blast us whenever we sow doubt or concern into their all growth is good direction.
Despite this toxicity, we still persist for now.
This started as an endeavor to report about the unhoused and those living long term in motels, due to a local affordability crisis. Many of our posts and articles have led to new connections and people being directly helped by others in the community.
We get the nicest messages as well. We have amazing supporters via our Substack and a few Facebook and Instagram subscribers, for which we are extremely grateful. They help us pay for our website’s subscription and maintenance, as well as printing out a yearly zine, and occasionally if there’s enough left over, paying reporters and designers from our community. We once got a grant for hosting live awareness events and paying writers who were previously living on the streets.
Other than that, this is a volunteer endeavor, which will not refrain when asked to do so to look into local alerts we receive, and expose the corrupt, the malevolent, the abusers, the dog whistlers, the racists and those rejecting the other within our community whatever that other might be, while elevating those bringing goodness, care and compassion.
