As the baton has officially been passed to Washoe County to take on leadership for helping our unhoused neighbors in northern Nevada, and American Rescue Plan funds are already being applied to these endeavors, advocates and those without stable shelter are still having major concerns about the Nevada Cares Campus. The official line has been more or less, “it’s a work in progress,” and we are getting money for future phases to get more people into housing. Another official line has been “it’s better than what we were offering before.” But is it? People who used to stay at the Record St. shelter and now stay at the campus have told us it’s even more crammed than before. They say it feels even more like a prison, with too much security fencing and too many guards, even as thefts are allegedly rampant. They say the staff is just as overworked, and that the food is just as unhealthy. They say meetings with case workers are few and far in between. They say new laundry machines broke down quickly, and that there aren’t enough towels for showering or blankets for the bunk beds at night. With millions already spent, was the budgeting done correctly?
I have been posting on pages of how it is to be a senior on SSD that gets 1k a month. Thank God I get the EA (Emergency Allotment) but seeing the demand of housing and the fact that the suits did not put in a credit protection for the length of the pandemic is making it impossible to afford anywhere. The demand will also we more than what can be provided. Some want the power but that is not leadership that is a boss. I contact the higher suits saying hey stimulus is needed. We need more funds for shelter. Why is only a fraction of the Rental aid going out? This should be looked at and the politcal figures need to see and feel it at ground zero. We are toyed with for votes then ignored til election time of promises or raised hopes while we suffer. We must do better for the new Transparency which is rarely done since its hype of a decade ago. Lack of doctors yes, we have UNR no reduced costs to work off a portion of the debt? that was talked about with Obama.. I am neither a fan or either party since they are of the same ilk and masters. I am so blown away by individual and groups to step up since the govt always screws up. Too many chiefs and not enough mover and shakers to get this done. How many are lost forever due to this unCAREing campus. Why the secrecy with tax payers money?
